The Power of Multisensory-Phonemic Instruction

Neuroscience confirms that brain neurons that fire together, wire together. When we teach using multiple senses simultaneously, neurons in the brain fire at the same time and wire together to create neural networks. These neural networks allow the brain to store and retrieve information much more efficiently. Eyewords™ innovative approach integrates multisensory instruction with sound mapping. Through multisensory instruction, we teach word meanings and pronunciations and with sound mapping, we establish connections between individual phonemes (sounds) and the corresponding graphemes (letters) representing those sounds within the word. In doing so, the phonemes, graphemes, and word meaning are inextricably linked and the word is stored as a sight word for automatic retrieval.
